West Jefferson
West Jefferson is the county seat of Ashe
County NC, and the largest town in the area. For
many years, West Jefferson was just a small,
sleepy mountain town close to Boone, North
Carolina and Appalachian State University. In
recent years West Jefferson has grown to become
a popular place for vacations and seasonal
residents to enjoy the mountain lifestyle and

town of West Jefferson.
West Jefferson is home to the Ashe County Cheese
Factory, the only cheese factory in North
Carolina. Many people like to stop in and see
them make the cheese and learn more about
cheese-making. West Jefferson is also home to many
local artists and crafters, and downtown you can
see many beautiful murals that show historical
depictions of life and culture in West
Jefferson. You can take a stroll down Main
Street and learn more about the history of Ashe
County NC through these magnificent pieces of art.
The artists and crafters in the area strive to
preserve the mountain culture and arts and there
are many local galleries and places to check out
local artists' work.
West Jefferson is a short drive away from Boone,
and about an hour and a half drive away from
larger cities like Winston-Salem, the tri-cities
area of Tennessee and Charlotte, North Carolina
making it a great place to live and play in the
mountains! |
